Hot take: Grease monkey gear oil ain't worth the price tag

I always bought the fancy brand name stuff for my dredge pump gearbox, figured it was safer. Then last month I ran out on a job near Baton Rouge and had to grab a generic 5 gallon pail from a local supply shop. After 40 hours of heavy sand pumping, I drained it and found zero grit or water contamination compared to the expensive stuff. Anyone else run a side by side comparison on cheap vs premium lubricants?

Yeah 40 hours is barely a break-in period for gear oil, not a real durability test.

Does anyone else feel like some people just want to see a product fail instead of actually testing it? Totally with you @oscar_hunt61, 40 hours is nothing when you're trying to see how something really holds up long term.
