Old timer on the job told me I was pulling too much vacuum on the cutter head
He said just back off the suction 15% and let the material feed itself, and after trying it on the Mississippi River job last month I stopped plugging the intake every 20 minutes - has anyone else had to unlearn aggressive digging habits?

You ever watch a guy try to muscle a dirt auger through clay like he's fighting it? I had a buddy who ran a trencher on a pipeline job, kept burning through teeth and stalling the motor, then a old hand told him to let the machine breathe and ease up on the downforce... he stopped breaking chains after that. Sometimes you just gotta trust the equipment knows what it's doing.

Let the machine breathe" really stuck with me, I used to think you had to push through tough ground but you just end up fighting it all day. That old hand was right, backing off saves your gear and your sanity.
