Buddy of mine got stuck in some muck near Port Arthur last fall and kept gunning it, just dug himself deeper. Slowed his cutter down to almost idle and the material finally started flowing into the dredge instead of just swirling around. He told me it felt wrong at first but that steady feed kept him from burning up the pump.

Your buddy nailed it. Had the same problem years ago in a muddy canal and finally learned that easing off the throttle is counterintuitive but it's the only way to get a steady cut without tearing everything up.
