Remember when you could just listen to the pump and know exactly what the riverbed was doing?

Last week on the Columbia, I was staring at a screen full of sonar data, thinking about how three years ago I'd have just felt the whole rig hum through my boots. Anyone else miss that kind of dirt-under-the-fingernails read on a job?

My old dredge had that same hum.

Hold on, that hum is a bad sign. My neighbor's dredge made that noise right before the pump bearing went out. It's not a normal sound, it's metal grinding without enough grease. He kept running it and the whole shaft seized up. Cost him way more to fix than if he'd just stopped and checked it early.
