Spent $900 on a sonar upgrade for my dredge and it paid off in one week
I was running an old fishfinder on my rig near Galveston and kept missing the good spots. Dropped $900 on a side-scan unit with GPS mapping last month. First week out I found a buried sandbar that had 4 feet of pay gravel sitting on top of it. Pulled almost 2 ounces before the weekend was over. The old unit would have shown flat bottom there. Anyone else had a electronics upgrade change how you work the riverbed?

Hell yeah, side scan is basically cheating once you learn to read it right.

Buddy of mine @the_phoenix spent a whole season ignoring side scan. Thought it was a gimmick. Then I took him out on my boat one afternoon. Showed him how to pick out stumps and brush piles on the screen. First cast he pulled a 5 pounder out of a spot he'd fished past a hundred times. Now he wont even go on the water without his unit on. Side scan just makes you look smarter than you are.
