I used to hang dry everything upside down until a friend showed me her messy method

For about 3 years I always hung my eucalyptus and lavender stems upside down in bunches with rubber bands. Then my neighbor Sarah invited me over in March and her dried flowers were just laying flat on a wire shelf with no rhyme or reason. She said gravity makes stuff droop all weird and she was right. Now I dry my baby's breath and ferns flat on a mesh screen and they keep their exact shape. Has anybody else tried laying them out instead of hanging?

Sarah's method makes total sense to me now that I think about it. I hung my lavender for years too and always wondered why the stems started curving like they were reaching for something. Gravity is just not our friend when it comes to hanging flowers, especially the lighter stems like ferns. I switched to laying my eucalyptus flat on a cookie cooling rack last batch and they came out way better, no droop at all. It feels weird at first because hanging is what everyone says to do, but your mileage may vary big time. Thanks for sharing this, I'm definitely sticking with the flat method from now on.

Sarah is onto something. I tried laying lavender flat on a baking rack last summer and the stems stayed straight instead of curving inward. Gravity definitely pulls hanging stuff into weird angles over time.
