Rant: That week I tried drying hydrangeas in my basement instead of the garage was a total disaster

Lost about 40 blooms to mold in just 5 days because the humidity levels were way higher than I expected down there, and now I'm back to hanging them in the garage where it's drier - has anyone else had a drying spot that seemed fine but turned out terrible?

Oh man that sucks big time! I did something similar last year but with lavender. Thought the shed would be perfect but turns out the roof had a tiny leak I didn't notice and half my bunches got this weird musty smell that wouldn't come out no matter what I did. My neighbor told me she dries everything in her attic and I tried that once but it was way too hot and everything just crumbled into dust. Now I just hang stuff in the kitchen near the window even though my wife hates how it looks. Sometimes you just gotta accept the learning curve with this stuff I guess.

...and the thing is, did you bother to actually measure the humidity in the basement before you hung everything? Because I used to just guess and it blew up in my face every time. A cheap little hygrometer costs like ten bucks and would've saved you those 40 blooms. I keep one in my garage now and check it before I even start. The difference between a good spot and a bad spot is literally just that one number.
