Wrote off silica gel packs as a gimmick for 6 months
Last winter I kept losing dried hydrangeas to mold in my garage. A friend from the local garden club told me to toss in those little silica packs you get from shoe boxes. I thought she was crazy but tried it with a batch of 12 stems. After 8 weeks not a single head had gone fuzzy. Now I save every pack I find and buy bulk ones on Amazon for $15. Has anyone else found a weird trick that actually works?

Oh man, "gimmick" is exactly what I called them too. I thought it was just marketing hype from all those online storage blogs. Then I tried one in my coin jar to stop tarnish and I was like, well, I guess I'm the fool here. Now I have a little baggie of them in my tool drawer, my camera bag, and even one tucked in my winter boots stash. It's kind of embarrassing how much I love these little packets now.

Hey have you tried tossing a few packs in with your dried flower stems before you store them? @lisa_grant is right about how well they work, I do the same thing with my hydrangeas now and havent lost a single one to mold since.
