Learned the hard way about fresh water pump strainers at Sausalito Marina

Last Tuesday my pump started making this awful grinding noise at 6am and I thought I was going to have to drop $300 on a new one. Turns out a tiny piece of plastic from a broken shampoo bottle had jammed up the strainer basket and it took me all of five minutes to fix after I looked it up online. Has anyone else had random junk clog up their system from stuff that shouldn't even be in the tank?

That line about "stuff that shouldn't even be in the tank" really hit home because last month I pulled a weird rubbery o-ring out of my strainer that must have fallen off some old fitting years ago. Got me wondering how much random debris is just floating around in marina water tanks from people dropping tools and bottle caps and who knows what else over the years. I swear every time I open my strainer now it's like a little treasure hunt of things that have no business being in there but somehow ended up anyway.

Wait, you actually found an o-ring floating in your strainer? @the_miles, I gotta ask, was it like a black rubber one that looked like it came off a raw water pump or something? Ive pulled out some weird stuff from mine too, like a pebble once and a piece of what looked like a zip tie. Makes you wonder how many old hose clamps or broken impeller blades are just sitting at the bottom of those tanks waiting to get sucked up.
