Warning: that guy at the marina who fixed my seacock for $50
He said "just a little silicone and she'll be right" then left me with a slow drip that almost sank my boat last Thursday, has anyone else dealt with a handyman who uses the wrong sealant on through-hulls?

Took on a similar fix once with a guy who swore by "marine grade" silicone from a hardware store. Learned the hard way that through-hulls need proper 3M 5200 or else water finds its way in. Ended up hauling out for a weekend to redo all the bedding with the right stuff, plus new backing plates and nuts. A little bit of extra prep now beats waking up to a flooded bilge at 3 AM.

Wait, is 5200 really the right call for seacocks? I always thought you use 4200 on through-hulls so you can actually get them apart again without destroying the fitting.
