Why nobody mentions porthole seal failure until it's too late
I used to just wipe down my porthole gaskets with a damp rag every few months and call it good. Then last winter during a storm near Annapolis, I woke up to a puddle on my bunk - the seal had cracked and water was dripping right onto my pillow. Now I inspect those rubber gaskets with a flashlight every month and rub in a silicone conditioner I found for $6 at the hardware store. Has anyone else had a porthole leak at 2am like that?

Did the silicone conditioner actually fix the crack, or was it just a bandaid?
