A homeowner in Cincinnati told me 'just get it close' and I had to walk off the job

I was taping a basement ceiling for him last fall and he kept saying the seams didn't need to be perfect because he was going to put up a drop ceiling. When I explained that the drywall still needs to be flat for the grid to work right, he said, 'You guys always overcomplicate things.' I packed my tools and left. Has anyone else had a client who just didn't get why our work matters?

When that guy said "just get it close" I knew we were done. I had a homeowner once who wanted me to skip the mud on her closet ceiling seams because "nobody looks in there." Told her straight up that's how you get cracks showing through the paint in six months. She fought me on it but I stood my ground. Did it right anyway with thin coats and sanding. She called me back two years later to do her whole house after the cheap tape job in the bedroom started peeling. Gotta hold the line on the basics.

My last "close enough" job still haunts me in the shower.

Wait, what exactly happened on that job that still bugs you? Was it something the homeowner pushed for or did you cut a corner yourself and regret it? I ask because I've got a couple of those in my past too, and they always come back to haunt you at 3 AM when you're trying to sleep. Sometimes it's a small thing like a crooked outlet cover that nobody else would notice but you know it's there. What was the specific moment that made you realize it wasn't good enough?

What did he say when you started packing up? Bet that shut him up real quick.
