Built a drywall bookshelf into my living room wall as a side project.

It's sturdy and blends in perfectly with the room.

Yeah, that's actually a really good point about the acoustics. I bet cutting into the drywall like that does change how sound moves around, since it's not a flat surface anymore. All those books and the shelf itself probably soak up some of the higher pitches too, so the room might sound a bit less echoey. I mean, it's not like a recording studio change, but you'd probably notice it if you played music in there compared to before.
