My kid asked why we call it 'mud' when it's not dirt

He said it looks more like frosting, and now I can't unsee it while taping. Anyone else have a name for joint compound that makes more sense?

My buddy's wife always calls it "wall cheese" when he's doing drywall... she said spreading it looks exactly like putting cream cheese on a bagel. Now that's all I picture too, this weird cheesy texture going on the wall. He tried to correct her once and she just pointed at his knife and the tub... he had no comeback. Kinda ruined bagels for him for a while though.

My cousin's husband does the same thing with spackle... calls it "wall butter" and now I can't unsee it either. He'll be smoothing out a patch and just go "pass the butter knife" like it's totally normal.

Ever notice how we rename boring stuff to make it fun? My dad calls the remote "the clicker" and my mom says "time to feed the parking meter" like it's a pet. We just can't help turning chores into little games.
