My taping knife snapped on a big ceiling job yesterday

I was working on a living room ceiling in a house over in Oak Park, about 1,200 square feet of board. My 12 inch stainless steel knife just cracked right down the middle while I was finishing a long seam. Had to switch to my backup 10 inch and it threw off my rhythm for the rest of the day. Anybody ever had a decent brand knife fail like that out of nowhere?

Had a buddy lose a Goldblatt knife mid job on a high end basement finish. The blade just snapped at the rivet while he was pulling a long coat of mud. He said it sounded like a firecracker going off in the room. He had to finish the whole ceiling with a cheap plastic pan scraper he found in his truck. Still bugs him when he talks about it. You ever get that lucky with a backup on site?

That bit about the "cheap plastic pan scraper" really got me, @abby_king22. Did he say if the scraper actually got the job done okay, or did it leave a rough finish he had to come back and sand down later? I've heard guys say a plastic scraper can work in a pinch, but I can't imagine using one for a whole ceiling without it flexing too much.
