My uncle insisted I use a paint roller to apply joint compound... and I actually tried it on a small patch.

That "cold oatmeal with a rolling pin" thing is exactly how I pictured it going down. I gotta hand it to you for actually trying it though, and @christopher_west1 is right about the air bubbles - I had the same nightmare when I was dumb enough to test a similar hack on a closet ceiling. At least you found out on a small patch instead of your whole living room wall.

A paint roller for joint compound? I have to say, that is one of the wildest DIY tips I've ever heard. The texture would be a nightmare, like trying to spread cold oatmeal with a rolling pin. You'd get bubbles and ridges everywhere. I'm honestly impressed you even gave it a shot on a test patch.

Tried that once on a ceiling repair and it was a total mess, just like @bettmurphy said. Ended up with so many air bubbles I had to sand for hours. Switched to a wide taping knife and it went on smooth in half the time. That roller trick is one of those ideas that sounds okay until you actually do it.
