Old timer at Home Depot told me I was overloading my mud pans

Was grabbing some compound last Tuesday and this guy in his 60s sees me grabbing a big pan. He goes 'you're making more work for yourself kid'. Said he only uses a 6 inch pan for almost everything except big flat walls. Told me smaller pans = less cleaning, less waste, faster work. Been trying it for a week and I swear I'm not going through as much mud. Anyone else run small pans like that?

nah bro i gotta push back on this one. maybe that old guy has his method but a 6 inch pan is gonna take you forever on anything bigger than a patch job. i run a 14 inch pan for beds and butts and i swear i can cover twice the area in the same time. cleaning takes like 2 extra minutes max, and waste? just scrape it back in the bucket or let it dry and knock it off. bigger pans let you lay down smoother coats with less stopping to reload. that old timer probly just got set in his ways and forgot what it's like to work fast on real sized rooms.
