Spent 6 hours chasing a dead outlet that turned out to be a loose neutral in the panel

I got a call last Thursday from a homeowner in the older part of town, said one of their kitchen outlets just stopped working mid-afternoon. I showed up thinking it'd be a quick swap, maybe a bad receptacle or a tripped GFCI somewhere. But nope, I checked every outlet on that circuit, pulled them all out, tested voltage and continuity and everything checked fine at each box. After about 4 hours of scratching my head and double checking my meter, I finally opened up the main panel and found a neutral wire that had backed out of the lug just enough to lose connection under load. It was one of those things where you don't think to check the panel because the breaker never tripped and everything else on that leg worked fine. Has anyone else had a simple problem turn into a half day hunt like that?

And of course the loose neutral was hiding right where you started.

...and that's EXACTLY why I always take photos BEFORE I touch a single wire. Nobody talks enough about how easy it is to forget where stuff was when you're crawling out from under a panel. You think you'll remember but your brain is already thinking about the next problem. The real lesson here is trust your gut but double check with documentation. Even a cell phone pic saves you hours of pulling your hair out later.
