My Hakko FX-888D iron just gave up the ghost mid-job on a vintage receiver

It was working fine, then the temp dropped like a rock and wouldn't recover, leaving me stranded halfway through a recap. Anyone have a reliable bench station they swear by for this kind of work?

Classic Hakko death mid-job, that's almost a rite of passage for vintage gear. Sounds like it's having a dramatic meltdown while you're trying to fix something else's meltdown. Did you at least finish the recap before it totally gave up?

Honestly, that iron's probably just got a bad connection or a blown fuse, not a total write-off.

You might be right about a simple fix, @wilson.emma, but my last iron had the same issue and it was a total mess. The heating element went bad after a similar problem, and it started scorching all my clothes. Even after replacing the cord, the temperature control was completely broken. Sometimes these things are just past saving, you know?
