Serious question about thermal paste application methods
I had a guy bring in a laptop last month that kept overheating, and when I opened it up someone had put thermal paste on like it was peanut butter on a sandwich. Huge glob in the middle, none on the edges. I see tutorials online where people do the pea method or the spread method, but I swear half the time it comes out wrong. How do you guys actually apply it without making a mess or leaving gaps?

The glass test is honestly the best tip I ever got too. I used to always panic and put way too much paste on, then spend 20 minutes cleaning off the sides. Now I just do a tiny dot smaller than a grain of rice and let the cooler smoosh it flat, never had a hotspot since.

Have you tried the pea method but with a smaller pea than you think you need? That's what finally worked for me after ruining a few builds. I was always putting too much on, thinking more coverage was better, but you really just need a tiny dab in the center and let the pressure spread it. I actually test it on a piece of glass first to see how much it spreads, sounds weird but saved me from a messy CPU a while back.
