Got called out on my hoistway door adjustment method in Cincinnati

An old timer named Frank saw me fighting a set of doors on a 90s Otis and said, 'Kid, you're just chasing the problem. The bottom guide is a full inch out.' I was so focused on the top hanger I missed it. Now I always check the sill and bottom guide first before touching anything else. Anyone have a go-to tool for checking that bottom track alignment fast?

My buddy Mike spent a whole morning on a top roller before realizing the sill was off by 3/4 inch, just like @thea271 said about missing the obvious.

Man, that line about "chasing the problem" hits so hard. I mean, I've totally been there, just zeroed in on one thing and missing the obvious fix. It's so easy to do. Checking the sill and bottom guide first is such a solid rule now, I do the same thing. For a quick check, I just use a decent level and a tape measure, nothing fancy. It gets the job done fast.

Ever try a laser level for that? I got a cheap one and it shows the whole run at a glance.
