I finally got why the old guys always carried a specific feeler gauge set
A foreman in a 1970s high-rise in St. Louis once handed me his and said, 'This one's for listening to the doors, not just looking.' Has anyone else had a tool tip that completely shifted how you approach a routine check?

It's about the feel, not the number.

That "feeling the feedback" part nails it. I had an old timer show me once how to hold a wrench loose and let the vibration tell you if a bolt was gonna snap before you even got a turn on it.

That line about "listening to the doors" is so cool. I read an article once where a mechanic talked about using a screwdriver handle to his ear like a stethoscope to hear a bearing. It's exactly what @tylerr29 said, it becomes about the sound and the feel in your hands. You start to trust the feedback from the tool more than just what the measurement says. It turns a simple check into a whole conversation with the machine.
