Rant: I used to think those old Otis relay panels were just junk waiting to fail, but a retired mechanic at a parts yard in Philly told me, 'Kid, that's not a bug, it's a feature - you can hear exactly what's thinking wrong,' and now I listen before I just start swapping parts.
He showed me how to trace a sticky floor-level relay by the specific click pattern on a 1970s unit we were pulling for scrap, saving me hours of guesswork on a similar job the next week.

Right? The old guys know their stuff.

I don't know, sometimes tapping a relay can mask a loose wire that'll come back to bite you later. Those old guys also thought asbestos was a great insulator.

Exactly. That click is a full diagnostic report if you know how to listen. A slow, lazy click often means a weak coil or dirty contacts, while a fast, chattering sound points to a voltage drop somewhere in the control circuit. Always tap the relay body lightly with a screwdriver handle while it's trying to pull in. If it clicks then, you've found your sticky culprit. Saved my skin more than once on those old freight elevator panels.
