Realized I'd been drawing rivers wrong for 2 years

Stared at my map for an hour trying to figure out why my river looked like a fork in the road. Then my buddy pointed out that rivers merge downstream, they don't split like tree branches. Has anyone else had a basic geography fail that wrecked their whole fantasy map?

The rivers merge downstream, they don't split like tree branches" really hit me because I spent months on a map where my main river just exploded into a dozen tiny streams for no reason. Turns out that only happens in river deltas near the coast, and even then it's specific to flat, sediment-heavy areas. I had to scrap half my world because the geography just stopped making sense once I geeked out on basic hydrology for a week.

Hold up though, rivers splitting inland is actually more common than people think, just not in the way most fantasy maps show it. Braided rivers are a real thing in places with lots of gravel and sand, like in New Zealand or Alaska, where the water constantly shifts and splits around islands of sediment. Plus, there are distributary channels in wetlands and floodplains that can break off from the main flow for miles before rejoining. It's not just deltas, it happens in alluvial fans too where a river hits a flat valley floor. So your original map might not have been totally wrong, just maybe needed some specific terrain features to back it up.
