Trying to decide between labeling mountains with icons or just text...
I was working on a map for my pirate campaign and got stuck on this for a whole evening. Went with simple text names in the end because the little mountain symbols kept cluttering the coastlines... anyone have a better method for showing rough terrain without it looking messy?

Yeah, mixing textures with a few key icons is the way to go. A faint background pattern for the whole region, then just one or two bigger symbols for the main landmarks. Keeps it clean but still shows the important stuff.

Oh man, that's the worst. When you tried the icons, did you use just a few bigger ones for whole mountain ranges, or were they scattered everywhere? I've found that even a light texture, like some tiny green dots for forest or faint brown lines for hills, can hint at rough ground without needing a symbol for every peak.

Got me wondering about scale, like how do you handle a huge area versus a single big hill? I mean, if I put a texture of little brown lines across a whole region, it just looks like dirt, not hills. But maybe I need to mix it, like use the texture for the big area and then drop a couple bigger icons just at the main peaks to point them out.
