Why does placing cities feel so arbitrary on fantasy maps?
It's hard to make settlements look natural and part of the world.

Ugh, you hit the nail on the head with "part of the world." I stare at my map and a perfect spot for a harbor city has NO fresh water source, or I put the capital in a mountain pass that would be a logistical nightmare. You need rivers, roads, farmland, AND it has to look cool. It makes my brain hurt trying to balance realistic needs with a vibe that feels fantastical. I end up overthinking every single dot.
