Bought a $50 rasp from a random brand and it cut like butter compared to my expensive one for 3 years

I was at a hoof care clinic in Kentucky last fall and the guy teaching let me try his cheap rasp for one pass on a sole and I realized I'd been muscling through with a dull tool the whole time, has anyone else had a brand surprise them like that?

Thing is, the expensive rasps actually do cut when they're brand new and sharp, but they lose that edge way faster than people realize lol. I used to think I was just getting a better tool that would last years, but it goes dull in like three or four trims if you're doing it right and actually touching the sole. The cheap ones sometimes use a softer steel that doesn't hold an edge long either, but they start out with a much more aggressive cut out of the box so it feels like magic compared to a worn out expensive one. What really got me was finding out you can take a cheap rasp to a bench grinder and freshen up the teeth yourself, try that with a $150 brand and you'll snap the heat treatment instantly. Sounds like that instructor knew the trick and just didn't bother telling anyone lol.

And here I've been thinking I was building character by wrestling with my expensive rasp for the last two years. Turns out I was just building a callus on my palm and a bad attitude about hoof trimming. Maybe the cheap ones are just smarter about not pretending to be something they're not.

Used to think paying more meant you got something that actually worked BETTER, but this makes total sense. A tool that fights you the whole time isn't earning its keep, it's just making the job harder for no good reason. The cheap rasp might not look as fancy but if it gets the hoof done without giving you a death grip all day, that's a win in my book. Kinda feel like I've been fooled by the whole "you get what you pay for" thing for years honestly.
