My favorite anvil stand cracked right down the middle during a job last Wednesday
I was reshoeing a big draft horse and right as I set the foot down, I heard this loud pop. Looked down and there was a crack running from the top bolt all the way to the base plate. It was a 4x4 oak stand I built myself about 2 years ago, so I honestly thought it would hold up longer. I had to finish the shoe on the tailgate of my truck, which wasn't fun. Has anyone else had a wooden stand suddenly fail on them like that?

Didn't think wooden stands could fail like that until I read this. Always figured oak was tough enough for anything but I guess not when you got a big horse throwing all its weight down. I used to argue with people about using wood vs metal stands but now I'm seriously reconsidering. Gonna check my own stand more carefully after hearing this. Thanks for sharing the experience, it really made me think twice.

Yeah @nora535 that "big horse throwing all its weight down" is exactly what did mine in. I switched to a metal stand with a wooden cap on top and its been solid ever since, no cracks or issues.
