Pro tip: That 'quick trim' on a long toe is doing more harm than good
I keep seeing folks at shows just rasp the front of a long toe down to make it look shorter... but they leave the heel high. Saw a horse in Lexington last weekend with a broken back hoof axis because of it. The whole foot's balance is off, and now that horse is walking on its heels. It's not a trim, it's a band-aid that makes the real problem worse. How do you guys explain this to owners who just want a 'neat' look fast?

That "broken back hoof axis" you saw is the perfect example. I ask them if they'd wear shoes that forced them to walk on their heels all day. It's not about a neat look, it's about where the bones inside are sitting. A quick rasp just moves the problem up the leg.

@gavinperez, right? It's just so wrong.

Hey, isn't "broken back" for a forward break or a reverse break too, or are you just talking about the angle from the pastern?
