Got called out for using too much black at a Portland design review
A mentor straight up told me my portfolio looked like a 'goth funeral procession'. That was harsh. I realized I was using black as a safety blanket. Started forcing myself to pick one bold color per piece, like a bright orange lining. My work feels way more alive now. Anyone else get stuck in a color rut and break out of it?

Ouch, that's a brutal way to put it.

Nah, just calling it like I see it, @grantthomas. You know how it is.

You say "calling it like I see it" but man, I think you're just spinning it negative. Grant's just trying to talk about something real and you jump down his throat with that. Like maybe he's got a point you're not giving him credit for. This whole tough guy "I tell it straight" thing just feels like an excuse to be a jerk sometimes. You could just say "I see it different" without making it sound like he's wrong for having his own take.
