My professor in Portland said my color palettes were too 'safe' and predictable, which pushed me to finally try that neon green accent I was scared of.

I was so worried it would look tacky, but adding just a small strip of that bright green to a black blazer design completely changed the energy of the piece for the better!

Oh man, that's the best feeling. I had a teacher tell me the same thing years ago and it totally unlocked something. That tiny bit of a wild color in a mostly neutral piece is like a secret weapon, it makes everything else look more on purpose. I mean, you can always take it out if you hate it, but you almost never do.

My old art teacher said that too, but honestly I've pulled out that one weird color more times than I've kept it. It just ends up looking like a mistake to me.

Nah, I get that. Sometimes that one weird color just doesn't sit right no matter what. I've had it work out exactly once in like ten tries. The rest of the time it looks forced, like you tried too hard to be clever. But when it does land, it really lands.
