My professor said my color palette looked 'like a hospital waiting room' last semester.

I was using way too much white and beige. Now I force myself to pick at least one bold color for every collection board. Anyone else get harsh feedback that actually helped?

My old boss said my designs looked like a sad beige computer from 1998, so I feel that.

Have to agree with @the_mia here - that "sad beige computer" line is brutal but honestly kind of funny in a horrible way. Sounds like your old boss had a real talent for insults wrapped in weirdly specific imagery. I bet if you showed them a flashy neon design with all the bells and whistles they would have complained it looked like a circus website. Some people just want to feel superior by cutting down whatever you show them. Best thing to do is just nod, say "okay boss," and then go back to doing it your way when they are not looking.

That "sad beige computer" line is such a specific burn, ouch. I had a boss who said similar stuff. What worked for me was making three super colorful versions first, like way over the top, just to get the "make it pop" note out of their system. Then the fourth version, my actual good one, would look calm and professional by comparison, and they'd usually go for it. It's a dumb game, but it saves a lot of back-and-forth.
