A guy in Denver told me my post caps looked like cheap plastic toys

He said it right after we finished a 200-foot vinyl job last fall. I was using those basic white caps from the big box store because they were fast and cheap. Now I only use the heavy-duty, solid vinyl caps from a real supplier, even though they cost 3 bucks more each. The difference in how a finished fence looks is huge. Anyone else get called out on a small detail that made you change your whole approach?

Honestly that guy sounds like a snob. Most people just see a nice fence, not the tiny caps. Spending three extra bucks each adds up fast for no real gain.

Yeah, the "no real gain" part @the_logan mentioned is so true. I read this article about how our brains just fill in details from far away. So you might notice the fence color, but not the fancy post caps until you're right up on it. It's like how you see a clean car, not the brand of the wax. Spending all that extra cash on tiny details most people will never even focus on seems wild to me.

The_logan gets it. Did my own fence last fall. Those caps are like 80 cents for basic white plastic. The fancy ones were four bucks each. Multiply that by 50 posts. You're talking a couple hundred bucks for something you only see when you're mowing.
