Had to choose between a 6-foot cedar fence or a 4-foot chain link for a backyard in Tacoma with a steep slope.

Went with the cedar for privacy, but the install took three days longer and cost about $800 extra because of the grade, so now I'm wondering if the client would've been just as happy with the cheaper, faster option.

Bet on the cedar every time. That extra cost buys you a solid barrier against noise and nosy neighbors, which chain link just can't do. On a slope, the visual screen is even more important for feeling enclosed. Do you know if they have kids or dogs that needed containing too?

Totally agree on the visual screen point. A chain link fence on a slope just shows off the whole messy yard next door. The cedar makes it feel like your own private space, which is the whole point.
