Hot take: Pre-drilling screw holes on cedar fences fixed my splitting problem

I started drilling pilot holes for every screw when putting up cedar fences this year. It slows me down a bit, but I haven't seen any cracked boards or had to go back for repairs. Do you think this step is needed for cheaper woods like pressure-treated pine, or just a waste of time?

Absolutely, pre-drilling makes a huge difference. I learned that the hard way on my own fence project last summer.

Totally, the type of wood matters a ton too. Cedar splits way easier than pressure-treated pine if you skip the pilot hole. Had a board snap right in half on a humid day, the moisture made it super brittle lol.

Honestly, skipping the pilot hole can save so much time on softwoods.
