Our crew's pre-job huddles used to be in person every time.

I started putting up fences twenty years ago, and things were different back then. Our foreman would call us all together at the start of each day to go over the plan. Now, most of that happens through group texts or quick calls. It's faster, but I kinda miss seeing everyone's faces and sharing a coffee. Makes me think about how the trade's social side has shifted.

Honestly I used to push for all the group texts and apps because I thought it saved so much time. Reading these posts about your crew really got me thinking. You're right that you lose something when you can't see a guy's face to know he's tired or confused. That gut feeling about the team is huge for getting things done right. Now I'm starting to see those old school huddles were about way more than just the plan for the day.

Doesn't this happen with everything now?

Yeah the part about seeing everyone's faces really hits home. Those quick chats before work let you catch if someone was tired or confused just by looking at them. Now with a text, you just get the words, not the feeling behind them. We solved a lot of small problems before they even started just by being in the same spot. It built a different kind of trust, where you knew the guy next to you got it. That social glue made the hard days easier and the work just fit together better.
