My kimchi fermenting loudly scared off my dinner guests last night
In my experience, an active ferment means it's working, but your mileage may vary if your friends are easily spooked.

Bubbling sounds are normal, but the loudest ferments can sometimes mean things are moving a bit too fast. Maybe check the temperature where you have it stored.

Yikes, my buddy Dave had his sauerkraut go totally nuts like that. It was in a warm pantry last July and got crazy fizzy, basically volcanoed all over his kitchen counter. He moved it to the basement where it was cooler and it calmed right down.
