I loaded my film wrong and shot a whole roll of nothing

I was at the park last week with my Pentax K1000, feeling good about a roll of Portra 400. I finished the roll, rewound it, and when I opened the back, the film leader was still out. It never caught on the take-up spool. I mean, I was sure I heard the rewind knob turn when I advanced the first frame. I guess I didn't pull the leader far enough across. So I basically shot 36 pictures of the inside of my camera. Has anyone else done this and have a good trick to make sure it's loaded right?

My old K1000 needs the film leader past that little silver hook inside.
