I was loading film wrong for months and didn't know it

Honestly, I just figured out last week that I've been putting the film leader in the take-up spool wrong on my Pentax K1000. I thought you just slid it in the slot, but I was missing the crucial step of making sure the sprocket holes were actually hooked on the little teeth inside. The tip off was that my last three rolls from a trip to Portland came back from the lab with the first few frames completely blank, but the rest were fine. The lab guy said it was a classic sign of the film not catching right away. I felt so dumb because I've probably wasted like $50 on film and developing over the last six months. Ngl, I watched a five minute YouTube video and realized I'd been doing it the lazy way the whole time. Has anyone else had this happen, or is there a better trick to make sure it's loaded right?

My buddy did that and shot a whole roll of his kid's birthday party on blank film, right?

My first roll ever was blank because I forgot to actually put film in the camera.
