PSA: That $12 toaster repair kit on Amazon is a total scam.
I tried fixing my grandma's 1980s Sunbeam toaster at her house in Tulsa last Sunday, and the kit's wires were half the gauge they should be. Anyone else found a reliable source for actual heating element wire that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

You mentioned "smoking" so I have to ask - is it a little wisp of smoke or is it billowing out like a house fire? My toaster has done that before when a crumb got stuck, but it cleared up after I unplugged it and shook it out. I feel like people are quick to declare appliances dead these days when they just need a good clean or a rest. Maybe give it a day to cool down and try again before you resign yourself to cold bread forever.

Did you check if old toaster wire is actually nichrome 80 like I read on a repair blog last week?
