Found a simple fix for my PS2 disc read error

My old PS2 stopped reading games last week. I tried cleaning the lens with alcohol but it still skipped. Then I remembered a trick from an old forum - adjusting the white gear on the laser assembly by a couple teeth. Worked like a charm and the thing reads discs perfectly now. Anyone else had luck with this fix or found another way to revive a dying laser?

Oh man, that white gear trick is a lifesaver! I did the same thing on my fat model PS2 a few years back when it started skipping on GTA: San Andreas. Turned it just three teeth clockwise and it was like a brand new console. Had to re-adjust the white gear a couple times after that but it kept the old girl running for another year or two before I finally gave up and got a slim model.

My buddy tried the same fix on his launch PS2 when it started acting up with Gran Turismo 4. He got so frustrated after the third time adjusting it that he just threw the whole thing in the closet. Still sitting in there to this day lol.
