Showerthought: I thought those cheap 'universal' power adapters were junk until one saved my old Game Boy Advance SP.

After my original charger broke, I bought a $7 adapter from a local flea market and it's been working perfectly for over 4 months now, so what's the most surprisingly reliable fix you've found for a console?

That universal adapter is the flea market equivalent of a superhero in disguise. It looks sketchy but somehow outlasts the fancy branded stuff. My old DS charger is basically held together with hope and electrical tape at this point.

Hold up, you got lucky but that's a serious fire hazard waiting to happen. Those cheap adapters often have terrible wiring and no real safety checks, so they can fry your console or worse. I've seen a friend's outlet get scorched from a knockoff charger that looked fine. Spending a bit more on a proper replacement is way cheaper than dealing with a house fire or a dead system.

Totally agree with you on this one. It’s not worth gambling with cheap electronics, especially when they plug straight into a wall outlet. I’ve had a similar scare with a knockoff phone charger that started getting hot to the touch after a few months, and that was enough to make me switch back to official stuff. Your friend’s scorched outlet is exactly the kind of thing that makes me cringe when I see people using those universal adapters. The extra twenty bucks for a proper replacement feels like nothing compared to the potential mess. I’d rather have a working console and a house that isn’t on fire, personally.
