That Beats Pill speaker I found for $5 gave out after three weeks

Picked up a Beats Pill at a church rummage sale in Akron last month for $5, thought I scored big until it started crackling on the left driver. Pulled it apart and the battery had leaked onto the board, no way to fix it without replacing half the internals. Anyone else gamble on electronics that look clean but end up being paperweights?

$5 for a Beats Pill that lasted three weeks is still a decent deal if you ask me. For that price, you got about 21 days of use out of it, that's like 24 cents a day. I've paid $30 for a Chinese Bluetooth speaker that died in a month, so you came out ahead. Plus, now you can sell the intact driver and casing online for parts and probably make your five bucks back. Seems like a win to me, not a paperweight story.

A buddy of mine picked up a used Beats Pill for ten bucks at a yard sale last summer. He got maybe two weeks out of it before it started making a weird crackling sound and then just gave out. He cracked it open hoping it was just a loose wire but the battery had swollen right up inside. He said the whole thing smelled like burnt plastic and he had to toss it in the e-waste bin at the dump. So I get the argument about getting your money's worth for a few weeks, but sometimes the hidden damage just makes it a hazard, not a bargain.
