Just lost a whole morning's pay because I trusted a 'self-leveling' compound that was anything but (you know, the kind that promises a perfect floor in 30 minutes)

Oh man, "perfect floor in 30 minutes" is the biggest lie in home improvement. I once tried that stuff and ended up with a modern art sculpture instead of a level surface. Those promises are basically just fancy words on a bucket.

Right there with you. That quick-set floor leveler turned my bathroom into a weird, lumpy moonscape. Followed the instructions to the letter and still got hills and valleys you could trip over. Those buckets should just say "good luck" on the side.

Good luck" would at least be honest, right? What actually worked for me after a similar disaster was mixing the self-leveler a little thinner than the bag said, using a cheap spike roller to work out the bubbles and spreading it in thinner layers. It still took a couple of tries, but I got a mostly flat floor out of it without the moonscape effect.
