Got stuck on a puzzle in the PS1 game 'Gex: Enter the Gecko' for a whole weekend

There's this one part where you have to hit three switches in a specific order inside a haunted house level, and the game gives you no clue. I must have tried every combo for about 8 hours before I looked it up online. What's the most time you've wasted on an old game's bad puzzle?

My cousin got stuck for hours in an old RPG thinking a bookshelf was a secret door. That feeling @the_thea mentioned is way too real, just pure pain. Some game devs back then were total trolls.
