Found a weird tape labeled 'July 4th 1998' at a yard sale in Akron

I was digitizing it last week and the screen just filled with static about 15 minutes in... like, thick black and white snow with a low hum. I let it run and after 3 minutes of that, it cut to a shot of an empty backyard at night with a single lit sparkler on the ground. The date on the tape was for daytime, so that felt off. Has anyone else had a tape switch content like that halfway through?

Totally get that feeling of finding something off. I swear old tech just does weird stuff sometimes. My old VCR used to eat tapes and spit out bits of other shows mixed in, like a cooking program would have 30 seconds of a baseball game from 1992 in the middle. Makes you wonder what gets left behind on all that magnetic tape, like ghosts in the machine lol.

Used to think that static was just a broken tape. That sparkler shot after the hum though, that's a whole different vibe. Makes you wonder what else is hiding in old footage.

Nah, static is just static. You're overthinking a broken tape.
