Rushing core drying cost us a whole batch
We had a tight deadline and tried to pour before the cores were bone dry. The castings had cracks and we had to scrap the whole batch. How do you make sure cores are dry enough without slowing things down?

People get so worried about that hollow sound test, but how many cracks actually come from slightly damp cores? We've pushed pours before with no issues. Maybe the problem wasn't just moisture, could have been a bad core mix or something else in the process. Everyone acts like it's a guaranteed disaster but it's not always that black and white.

Ouch, we do a quick tap test for a hollow sound before any pour.

Temperature and humidity can really mess with that hollow sound test. A hot dry slab might sound different than a cool damp one even if both are solid. Just something to keep in mind before you trust the tap.
