Struggled with a stubborn core knockout in a 400-pound steel casting for almost two hours.

Finally got it free by drilling a small weep hole and hitting it with a controlled shot of water from the steam lance. Anyone have a better trick for stuck phenolic cores?

We had a core get stuck so bad once we ended up using a dry ice and alcohol slurry. The thermal shock cracked it right out without damaging the casting walls.

Dry ice trick, @the_keith? What ratio of alcohol to ice worked?

Oh man, @the_keith is right about that thermal shock... we found a 50/50 mix of isopropyl and crushed dry ice works fast without being too harsh.
