Overheard a guy at the hardware store say he never sands before applying stain to 'save time'

I saw the blotchy, uneven mess he was working on, and it made me think, why would you skip the most basic step that guarantees a good finish?

Saw a guy do that once and the wood looked TERRIBLE. It's like skipping primer before paint, just asking for trouble.
