Warning: I was sanding a walnut table for a client in Akron and a tiny splinter made me realize my orbital sander technique was all backwards.

My uncle in Toledo has been a cabinet maker for forty years and he swears by sanding against the grain first. Says it cuts faster before you go back for the finish pass.
